Dozens of civilians, 10 U.S. troops killed in bloodbath at Kabul airport

Aug 26 (Reuters) - Suicide bombers struck the crowded gates of Kabul airport with at least two explosions on Thursday, causing a bloodbath among civilians and U.S. troops and effectively shutting down the Western airlift of Afghans desperate to flee.

The Pentagon said "a number" of American service members were killed. One U.S. official said according to initial reports at least 10 had died.

There was no complete death toll of Afghan civilians but video images uploaded by Afghan journalists showed dozens of bodies of people killed in packed crowds outside the airport.

A watery ditch by the airport fence was filled with bloodsoaked corpses, some being fished out and laid in heaps on the canal side while wailing civilians searched for loved ones.

Several Western countries said the airlift of civilians was now effectively over, with the United States having sealed the gates of the airport leaving no way out for tens of thousands of Afghans who worked for the West through two decades of war. (read more)

At least 12 U.S. troops killed in Kabul airport attack, officials say

WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - At least a dozen U.S. troops were killed and several others wounded in Thursday's suicide bombings at Kabul airport, U.S. sources told Reuters, in what the Pentagon said was a "complex attack" during its evacuation mission from Afghanistan.

In a statement, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed multiple U.S. fatalities but did not give details. The U.S. servicemembers were among those killed when at least two blasts tore through crowds thronging the airport gates.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that at least a dozen U.S. personnel were killed. Officials said that number could change and was expected to increase. Several other U.S. troops were wounded, the officials said.

A Taliban official said at least 13 people including children had been killed in the attack and 52 were wounded, though it was clear from video footage that those figures were far from complete.

Kirby is expected to hold a briefing at 3 p.m. EST (1900 GMT).

U.S. officials have said there are about 5,200 American troops providing security at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport. The suicide bombing attacks came after the United States and allies urged Afghans to leave the area around the airport because of a threat by Islamic State militants. (read more)
