An Introduction to The Left in 7 Parts

Part 1
Preface
First they came for certain words. Then they came for more words. Next they came after certain thoughts. Then they came after more thoughts. At last they came for our liberty - but we had no liberty then.

Part 2
A Cautionary Tale
How-To, and how the Left will collapse.

How to live, how to think, or how to die? How about, how to beg? The admirable Anders Carlson-Wee, son of two Lutheran pastors, he who rides the rails and forages for most of his food in dumpsters behind grocery stores, wrote a poem. It was published by The Nation and all hell broke loose. The usual subjects wailed, in 140 characters (more or less), of grievous injury to their sensibilities. The mob feigned their offended-ness. The poet and editors, in a spasm of virtue-signalling, played along and apologized excessively 1. The trio accepted their ritual defamation (pdf) while hoping the glorious leftward trajectories of their careers would not be derailed. They are all cerebral fools believing in the omnipotence of words; no one having told them words are essentially impotent in a barely literate time.

How-To
By Anders Carlson-Wee

If you got hiv, say aids. If you a girl,
say you’re pregnant––nobody gonna lower
themselves to listen for the kick. People
passing fast. Splay your legs, cock a knee
funny. It’s the littlest shames they’re likely
to comprehend. Don’t say homeless, they know
you is. What they don’t know is what opens
a wallet, what stops em from counting
what they drop. If you’re young say younger.
Old say older. If you’re crippled don’t
flaunt it. Let em think they’re good enough
Christians to notice. Don’t say you pray,
say you sin. It’s about who they believe
they is. You hardly even there.

What, you might ask, is outrageous about these 14 lines?
Has the poem really, "given offense and caused harm?" Show me the victim, where is the body, the bruises, the spreading pool of blood, and the grieving relatives huddled just beyond the police tape? If there was an offense, from the standpoint of Natural Law and Common Law and centuries of Anglo-American jurisprudence, it would have been a victim-less non-crime.

The three primary
actors in this tempest-in-a-teapot melodrama, the poet and the two poetry editors who approved the publication, are apparently liberal leftists. Did they transgress or is the permissible/impermissible boundary changing so rapidly?

This poet is familiar with hunger and thirst, having lived and traveled with those at the margins of our society. He knows solitary roads, the bitter winds that scour the frozen prairie and, f
rom long hours sharing their shanties and campfires, he learned the vocabulary and speech patterns of the homeless and addicted, and those with numerous encounters with armed enforcers. His poetic words came from the heart; from a heart that loves his neighbor, not in the abstract, but in those rough and raw moments when the least among us need us most.

How dare the pampered and privileged know-nothings, warm and well-fed within their safe-spaces, type their ignorant and scornful words. They will never see what Mr. Carlson-Wee has seen. They have never experienced real pain nor want nor fear, yet claim to have been hurt by the poet's ironic and instructive words. This reminds me of a saying in the Soviet Union, "They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work." Though today, in America, it has become, "We pretend to be offended and they pretend to apologize."

The short-lived frenzy over the publication of How-To by Anders Carlson-Wee is a promising development, though it was quickly pushed into the Memory Hole. This cultural revolution, like all previous revolutions, is now attacking its own partisans. Once revolutions degenerate into that stage, they descend into chaos, and start to decline as the hydrated rodents scurry off the sinking ship.

Part 3
O tempora, o mores! 2

Political Correctness (or Cultural Marxism or Cultural Maoism) is a Kafkaesque burlesque unfolding in public first on campuses and then infecting fellow-travelers on both coasts who are paying attention to such foolishness. Human Resources (what a Soviet term) departments, afraid of the big bad EEOC wolf are also on board with their brand of divisive diversity. This pox on society is augmented, channeled, and fine-tuned by Silicon Valley’s amplifiers, filters and repeaters. It is not a "two minutes hate" but a 24 hour hate-a-thon daily telling all and sundry who is the latest insensitive oppressor (hence object of our scorn) and who are the marginalized, the oppressed, the favored victims and the favored victim groups. The term,
“grievance studies," 3 has been coined to describe the "academic" disciplines that "study" these matters.

It is a Kabuki drama, ignored by most, but not by the young throngs who learned in Kindergarten or daycare how the blame game is played. The basic script calls for the throng to feign outrage that a person or group has been “wronged” and a fall guy is announced, then denounced, and is expected to debase himself (with fingers crossed behind his back) in a paroxysm of public apologies. He usually, but
mistakenly, plays along if "White Guilt" runs deep in him. He atones for an “infraction” where no physical pain was inflicted and no quantifiable losses were suffered. Anyone with an I.Q. higher than room temperature measured in degrees Fahrenheit knows this is done for show. But who produces this show, directs this show, and benefits from this show? The susceptible throngs are being conditioned - but towards what end?

They are being conditioned by so-called anti-fascist thugs and the fanatics of the "Cancel Culture" to resort to violence. They are being conditioned to antagonize and confront anyone who doesn't agree with them. They are being led to jail and the ER. They are being used.

Part 4
Moral relativism, weaponizing words and distorting their definitions, envy and resentment as high art (including an awareness of minutely segmented hierarchies of "privilege"), and a visceral hatred of certain religions and cultures, characterize this intolerant movement. Their "Great Satan" is a white, politically-conservative, Christian, heterosexual male who both dresses and functions like a man. Their highest "Saints" who can do no wrong, it seems,
are "People of Color" from what used to be called "the wrong side of the tracks" (now, termed, marginalized), who belong to sexual minorities.

From the
Frankfurt School, the Intolerant Throng borrows the war against social normalcy but broadened to be a total revolt against other types of normalcy and taboos. Their agenda and zeal come from Wilhelm "Willi" Münzenberg. Their financing now comes from mega-billionaires who harbor an extreme hatred of Western Civilization. They apparently believe that by destroying the West and its culture, they can prevent a second Holocaust. For them, "never again" is assured if the West falls and is overrun by the wretched masses from the teeming shores of the Third World. (The foregoing words are not antisemitic. The author of this page is Jewish. He is not a self-hating Jew.)

Part 5
a definition:
gender (noun) - kind, sort, class

Their views of sex (gender) might be "Politically Correct" but are Biologically Incorrect. One's sex is fixed at the moment of conception. Excepting very rare genetic conditions, humans have either two 'X' chromosomes (female) or an 'X' chromosome plus a 'Y' chromosome (male) in the nucleus of every single somatic cell. And, excepting very rare conditions, chromosomal females and chromosomal males have the corresponding "plumbing" associated with each. One's biological sex (identical with 'gender') is neither "assigned at birth" nor "observed at birth" - it is set for a lifetime when egg and sperm fuse.
The expressions: 'gender', 'gender identity', and 'gender expression' are not biological terms, they are used by the scientifically ignorant to create confusion. These word-playing confusers ludicrously extend the Marxist fiction that truth and knowledge are social constructs by claiming 'gender' is also a social construct.

Judith Butler, whose ponderous prose is filled with allusions to certain philosophers, in Gender Trouble (1989), proposed gender is a social artifice. She continued that theme in later books, thus confusing the two generations of modern feminists who take her seriously. Anyone who has reared and observed boys and girls knows gender is most certainly not merely a social construct. If you need proof, visit a home with three small boys and then compare that with a home with three small girls. Do you want to guess in which home everything that is fragile has been broken?

Butler also sees gender as performance, though not, she insists, in a theatrical sense. She says that we speak and act in "gendered" ways; in ways not deriving from biology, but offers no proof for that assertion. Butler envisions a multiplicity of 'genders' not necessarily correlated with the male and female sexes. This biological nonsense of "multiple" genders is not recent. Magnus Hirschfeld, founder of the
Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (open from 6 July 1919 to 6 May 1933) in Berlin, theorized there were 64 genders! While the Institute ostensibly offered therapy, its reputation suggests it catered to libertines and deviants. Is it possible that the confused residents of the Institute substituted, "Alle Menschen werden Schwestern.3" for "Alle Menschen werden Brüder. 4" when singing the Overture to Beethoven's 9th Symphony?

If you have lived long enough to acquire perspective, you see within any group of physically and emotionally mature adults, a continuum between masculinity and femininity. There is no single archetype of maleness, or femaleness. As it is said, "To each his own." One is even free to engage in fantasies or self-delusion or behaviors cataloged in the DSM. However, one should not expect (or demand) others participate in or approve of such fantasies or delusions or psychopathologies. That is simple courtesy; basic reciprocity. Demanding (or asking the state to require) that someone call you "she" when you have XY chromosomes is rude, egotistical, and verging on the dictatorial. Biologically incorrect beliefs should not be forced on those unwilling to participate in others' fantasies or delusions or psychopathologies. Regrettably, that is the tyrannical "tolerance" the intellectual heirs of Antonio Gramsci, the Frankfurt School, and Willi Münzenberg now demand. The 'Repressive Tolerance' of Herbert Marcuse, permitting no disagreement or discussion, is their model.

The Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexual Science) had rooms for patients and guests. The notorious
Willi Münzenberg was one such guest. Münzenberg, working with the Comintern and Soviet secret services, befriended and manipulated numerous Western intellectuals, writers, and artists. Münzenberg founded the culture war (kulturkampf) now called Political Correctness or Cultural Marxism. It was a deliberate strategy to undermine the morals and values and cultural foundations of the West. If you want to understand the virulent social disease infecting college campuses, please read: Double Lives: Spies and Writers in the Secret Soviet War of Ideas Against the West, Stephen Koch, The Free Press (Macmillan), 27 December 1993. Part 6
A Tour of a Plantation

The M. O. Plantation is deceptively beautiful. Its grounds and architecture evoke the classical and the timeless. The intellectual masters have their colonnades, porticoes, and cloisters. They can see all from their high Palladian windows. Their thoughts are so great and so lofty that they remind each other constantly of their greatness and loftiness. It must be so because they keep saying it is so.

There is a walled garden in the center. It surrounds the Tree of the Knowledge That They Are Evil. But no one may partake of its fruit. Tasting it brings the wisdom of the ages, and allows a remarkably clear view of the past and a glimpse of the future. Some have eaten the fruits.

Those who toil in the plantation stay in modest quarters. Their uniform requires a Jacobin Cap. They are frequently whipped up into mindless frenzies by their masters. They are told they have no volition and no choice. They respond slavishly.

The Manufactured Outrage Plantation permits no dissent or incorrect thoughts. Outrage must be an immediate and fully automatic response. They warm up with the rapid-fire shouts of, "racist", "Nazi", "fascist" and "homo-phobe" then proceed to denounce, "cultural appropriation", "hetero-normative" and "trans-phobia".  No one can think. All must act reflexively. Even the most innocent of perceived slights calls for disproportionate adrenaline-fueled fight or flight responses. No one knows to shrug off and simply ignore
perceived slights. Why let a careless word or harmless gesture go to waste?

ODI ERGO SUM
(I hate therefore I am
- the motto of the plantation)

Part 7
footnotes

1 "Editor’s note: On July 24, 2018, The Nation and its poetry editors, Stephanie Burt and Carmen Giménez Smith, made this statement about the poem below, which contains disparaging and ableist language that has given offense and caused harm to members of several communities:

"As poetry editors, we hold ourselves responsible for the ways in which the work we select is received. We made a serious mistake by choosing to publish the poem “How-To.”  We are sorry for the pain we have caused to the many communities affected by this poem. We recognize that we must now earn your trust back.  Some of our readers have asked what we were thinking. When we read the poem we took it as a profane, over-the-top attack on the ways in which members of many groups are asked, or required, to perform the work of marginalization. We can no longer read the poem in that way.

"We are currently revising our process for solicited and unsolicited submissions. But more importantly,  we are listening, and we are working. We are grateful for the insightful critiques we have heard, but we know that the onus of change is on us, and we take that responsibility seriously. In the end, this decision means that we need to step back and look at not only our editing process, but at ourselves as editors." (source)

2 Oh, what times! Oh, what morals! from Cicero's First Catiline Oration, of 8 November 63 BC. The four Catiline Orations of Marcus Tullius Cicero, were an extended denunciation of his political opponent, Lucius Sergius Catilina. Cicero was a "law and order" politician and protector of the status quo, and Catilina was a populist who fled Rome after the first oration. The orations are noteworthy in the history of politics for framing a debate we still have, the competing interests of state security (the wants of the elite few - then a corrupt oligarchy) versus civil liberty (the wants and needs of the many).

3 An article examines “grievance studies” as an academic sham. It is the source of these excerpts:

"Something has gone wrong in the university—especially in certain fields within the humanities. Scholarship based less upon finding truth and more upon attending to social grievances has become firmly established, if not fully dominant, within these fields, and their scholars increasingly bully students, administrators, and other departments into adhering to their worldview. This worldview is not scientific, and it is not rigorous. For many, this problem has been growing increasingly obvious, but strong evidence has been lacking. For this reason, the three of us just spent a year working inside the scholarship we see as an intrinsic part of this problem.

"We spent that time writing academic papers and publishing them in respected peer-reviewed journals associated with fields of scholarship loosely known as “cultural studies” or “identity studies” (for example, gender studies) or “critical theory” because it is rooted in that postmodern brand of “theory” which arose in the late sixties. As a result of this work, we have come to call these fields “grievance studies” in shorthand because of their common goal of problematizing aspects of culture in minute detail in order to attempt diagnoses of power imbalances and oppression rooted in identity.

"We undertook this project to study, understand, and expose the reality of grievance studies, which is corrupting academic research. Because open, good-faith conversation around topics of identity such as gender, race, and sexuality (and the scholarship that works with them) is nearly impossible, our aim has been to reboot these conversations. We hope this will give people—especially those who believe in liberalism, progress, modernity, open inquiry, and social justice—a clear reason to look at the identitarian madness coming out of the academic and activist left and say, “No, I will not go along with that. You do not speak for me.” "

4 Alle Menschen werden Schwestern. = All men become sisters.

Alle Menschen werden Brüder. = All men become brothers. Originally from the poem, An die Freude, by the Romantic poet, Friedrich Schiller.
