THE REAL SCIENCE

We are in the Pleistocene, an Ice Age. It began 2.588 million years ago when the Inter-American Seaway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans was closed by plate tectonic action creating the Isthmus of Panama, joining North and South America. The Pleistocene will continue until plate tectonics tears apart the Isthmus of Panama, restoring equatorial oceanic circulation.

Throughout the Pleistocene, the earth has spent 90% of the time in glacial periods and 10% of the time in interglacial periods. The current interglacial is called the Holocene. The previous interglacial, the Eemian, was warmer than the Holocene.

The onset of glaciation is usually preceded by a slowing, then termination of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Laymen and mariners call that circulation, the Gulf Stream.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation has been slowing. The Holocene will end in a few hundred to 1500 years.
