But what about the children? Don't you care about the children and their education?

Yes, I care deeply about the children - all children, even unborn children.

Just as sickness care at no cost to them lures the unfortunates from Latin America to the US, so does public education at no cost to them become another dangling carrot. (I employ the cumbersome phrase, at no cost to them, because it is ludicrous to call those goods, "free.")

So long as the US provides (wittingly or unwittingly) a pressure-relief valve for the states and failed states miss-ruled by certain corruptos, plutocrats, and narcotrafficantes, those same corruptos, plutocrats, and narcotrafficantes have NO incentive to enact meaningful reforms. Why should they? They live behind tall concrete walls topped with shards of broken glass. They travel in armored vehicles in convoys with armed guards riding separate cars ahead of them and behind them. They live like the Barons of olden times. While visiting the home of a billionaire in Mexico, I commented about all the gardeners milling about the expansive lawn, "No, Señor, they are not gardeners, they are guards," was the reply.

Sadly, our dangling carrots are a selective lure. Except for the current waves of so-called asylum-seekers, we have generally received, legally and illegally, the brighter ones, not the dullards, from those cursed lands. Thus, we are contributing to the collective enstupidation of the remaining campesinos of Latin America. The brighter ones, had they remained, would be the innovators and entrepreneurs - the drivers of economic growth. They would become the ascending generation of civil society stalwarts. They would, if united and numerous, provide an effective counter to the corrupt bureaucrats, the major landowners, and the rapacious politicians. All proponents of open borders for the US, whether it be for the cheap labor; or to dilute the influence of those who came from many lands and became one people. united by a common culture, a common purpose, and an uncommon work ethic to build this country; or out of hateful spite for what America represents; are, knowingly or unknowingly, consigning the poor countries of Latin America to perpetual backwardness and poverty. Those are the inevitable consequences of strip mining Latin America of its "best and brightest." Those lands will never recover from such a brain drain.

(This is not an indictment of any of the billionaires I have visited in Mexico. I have enjoyed their wit and wisdom, as well as their hospitality. They are intensely aware of the situation and are seeking reforms and solutions. I look forward to again going up in a Waco biplane with one of them and enjoying an eagle's perspective of the Sierra Madre Oriental.)
